Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team started their spring break trip on a high note as they picked up two dominate wins over Hamilton College. The Hawks won the first game 7-1 and kept the momentum rolling in game two, picking up an 8-2 victory.
Anthony Amoroso got the start in the opening game, and after allowing a first inning run, the sophomore right-handed pitcher shut down the Continentals. Amoroso only allowed five hits in his five innings pitched while striking out four and only walking two. After pitching struggles early in the season, head coach
Arlan Freeman has preached throwing more strikes to his pitchers and Amoroso did just that throwing 55 strikes out of 91 total pitches.
Adam Torres and Jeff Sara each threw an inning in relief and continued to keep Hamilton's offense as neither allowed a hit in the final two innings.Â
The bottom of the batting lineup was key in the Hawks win with
Anthony Pantano and
Ryan Frost chipping in two RBIs each in the eighth and ninth spot in the lineup.
Danny Campbell also had a solid day at the plate going 2-for-3, while
Zach Warenius and
Jake Williams added two hits each as well in four at bats.Â
After allowing a run in the opening inning, SUNY New Paltz exploded in the second inning. Williams led off with a double and then stole third putting him in position to score off a passed ball on the next batter. After Campbell singled to put runners on first and second, Pantano ripped a double to left center scoring both runners.
Julian Francisco and Warenius hit in the final two runs of the inning giving the Hawks a 5-1 lead. Frost added the final two insurance runs in the sixth inning with a single that scored Pantano and Campbell.
Just like the first game, SUNY New Paltz allowed a first inning run, but answered back in the second with a rally. Williams got the rally started again, this time with a single, but after advancing to second on a groundout and stealing third, he was able to score the same way he did the first game with an error by the catcher. Another error allowed
Ryan Frost to reach first base safely and Campbell to score.Â
The Hawks continued to add runs to their total in the third inning. Warenius jump started the rally this time with a double to left field. After
Chris Moran bunted Warenius over, Williams brought in the run with a sacrifice fly. With two outs and two men on base, Campbell singled through the left side and drove in two more runs for another three-run inning.
J.T. Carroll continued the dominance on the mound in game two throwing five innings in the start and allowing only three hits and one earned run.
James Magnuson and
John LoCurto came on in relief to close out the 8-2 win for SUNY New Paltz.
The Hawks are back on the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. against UMASS Dartmouth.
