Box Score 2 After winning the opening two games of their spring break trip, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team fell to UMASS Dartmouth 11-1 and Springfield College 8-5.
GAME 1: UMASS Dartmouth
The Hawks opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when
Jake Williams bunted for a single and an error on the second baseman allowed
Chris Moran to score from second base after a leadoff double. SUNY New Paltz was unable to keep the rally going, but took the 1-0 lead to the bottom of the second inning.
Michael Delio got the start on the mound and was able to give the Hawks a solid 6.1 innings pitched, only allowing four runs. However, the bullpen wasn't able to keep the Corsairs at bay and allowed a seven run eighth inning to close out the game 11-1.
SUNY New Paltz entered the eighth inning only down 4-1, and found themselves in position to start a comeback. Junior shortstop
Ryan Frost led off with a single up the middle and
Nick DePietro followed it up with a single of his own to make it first and second with nobody out. A
Julian Francisco sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Sophomore catcher
Zach Warenius drew a walk to load up the bases, but the Hawks were unable to move any runners across the plate. SUNY New Paltz left a total of seven runners on base throughout the eight inning game.
Delio held UMASS Dartmouth to nine hits and four runs during six and a third innings pitched while striking out four. Jeff Sara came on in relief in the seventh inning and got the final two outs without allowing any more damage.
Ryan Frost led all hitters for the Hawks going 2-for-3 on the day, while
Chris Moran notched the only extra base hit with his second inning double.
GAME 2: Springfield College
SUNY New Paltz was first to strike in the opening inning when Warenius was able to drive home DePietro with a single. However, the Hawks were unable to score again until the final inning.
Junior right-handed pitcher
Justin Stybel got the start on the mound and threw six solid innings allowing only three earned runs. Stybel didn't walk a batter and struck out eight during his time on the mound.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning, SUNY New Paltz was knocking on the door after
Dwayne Page started a two-out rally with a single. Page then stole second to move into scoring position, but
Danny Campbell was unable to drive the ball past the third baseman and the inning ended with two men left on base.
Entering the ninth inning, the Hawks found themselves down 8-1, but still made a final push at making a comeback. After Warenius reached on an error, Campbell doubled to put them both in scoring position. Moran took advantage and drove them both in with a single to decrease the lead to 8-3. Williams followed it up with a home run to keep the rally alive and make it a three-run game. However, the rally ended there and SUNY New Paltz dropped their second game of the day 8-5.
Williams went 2-for-4 on the day, while DePietro, Page, Warenius, Campbell, and Moran all chipped in a hit of their own.
