SUNY New Paltz Baseball Concludes Florida Trip with Tough Loss to Western New England

| By:
Box Score The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team concluded their spring break trip to Florida with a 14-1 loss to Western New England. The Hawks ran out of gas after playing eight games in five days, but head coach Arlan Freeman knows the tough loss doesn't take away from what his team showed they can do.

"I'm proud of our effort because not many teams could play this many games in so few days," said Freeman. "For us to beat (No. 11) Washington and Jefferson College and Babson College proves we can beat anybody in our conference and anybody in the nation. We ran out of energy, but we learned a lot about our team and the things we didn't do well this week we're going to work on and be better at next week."

With the Hawks down 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning to the Golden Bears, Anthony Pantano drove home Dwayne Page with an RBI single to make it a one-run game early on. However, that's when the number of innings played by SUNY New Paltz over the course of five days began to show and the Hawks couldn't keep up with the powerful Western New England offense.

SUNY New Paltz finished up the trip 4-4, but played some of the top competition in the country and showed that they have the weapons to beat anybody. SUNY New Paltz has their conference schedule on the horizon and with SUNY Cortland and Oswego State both in the top 25, the Hawks now have the confidence to play with anybody.

"It comes down to starting pitching and our ability to dictate the pace of the game," said Freeman. "Today we didn't do a great job of it and we're going to learn from it and come out stronger. We couldn't play our game because we couldn't get on base. We want to put pressure on the opposing defense and put guys in scoring position so we can come up with clutch hitting."

Although SUNY New Paltz played eight games in five days, they will only have two full days of rest before taking on their first SUNYAC opponent in Fredonia State on Friday at 3:00 p.m, followed by a doubleheader against the Blue Devils on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. Be sure to follow @nphawks on Twitter and @newpaltzhawks on Instagram and Facebook for updates, highlights, videos, photos and more.
