Salem, VA - Despite multiple come-backs, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team lost a well-fought 15-11 game on Saturday afternoon at Roanoke College. The Hawks fell to 3-2 on the year with the loss, while the Maroons improve to 5-3.

SUNY New Paltz got off to a shaky start, as Roanoke scored the first six goals of the game.

"Giving up six goals isn't ideal for the beginning of any game," Hawks coach Keith Detelj said. "But we managed to come back and show some grit."

After calling a timeout, SUNY New Paltz responded with five straight goals, including two from both freshmen attackers Tara Bovich and Amy Hofer, to make it a one goal game. Hawks senior attack Kayla Massena provided the fifth goal.Hofer_GIF

The Maroons tacked on three more goals in the first half, but Massena's second goal of the game made it a 9-6 match at halftime.

Roanoke struck first in the second half, as a goal by freshman attack Ellie Armstrong gave the Maroons a 10-6 lead.

However, SUNY New Paltz quickly went on another hot streak, scoring four-straight goals to tie the game at 10-all. Hawks sophomore midfielder Emily Puciloski scored two of the goals, while Massena and Hofer each recorded their third goals of the game.

Unfortunately, Roanoke halted SUNY New Paltz's attack and scored the next three goals to take a 13-10 lead. Although Puciloski notched her third goal of the game, it was not enough as the Maroons eventually went on take the 15-11 win.

"Our team showed some resiliency to get themselves back into the game and tie it up in the second half," Detelj said. "We will keep taking these challenges and study them, learn from them and get better from them."

SUNY New Paltz freshman defender Megan Tornatore held down the defense by causing three turnovers and adding four ground balls and two draw controls. Hawks junior defender Sarah Raynock collected a team-high five ground balls, won four draw controls and caused one turnover. SUNY New Paltz midfielder Keydy Espinoza led the team with five draw controls and notched one ground ball, while Hawks junior midfielder Ashley Seiter chipped in with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

SUNY New Paltz sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Sheintul made 11 stops in net to bump her season total up to 41, good for fourth in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks will next come home to face Bard College on Tuesday, March 27 at 4 p.m. on the North Turf Field. The Raptors currently hold a record of 2-2. Be sure to follow @nphawks on Twitter and @newpaltzhawks on Instagram and Facebook for updates, highlights, videos, photos and more.
