Box Score New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team came up short in their search for a sweep against the College at Brockport as they fell in the final game of the series 5-2. The Hawks out-hit the Golden Eagles 10 to seven on the day, but were unable to come up with timely hitting as they stranded 15 total runners.
"We just didn't play consistent baseball," said head coach
Arlan Freeman. "Both teams had their chances and Brockport was able to capitalize more than we were. It's tough to win a game leaving that many guys on base."
Seniors
Jake Williams and
Chris Moran got a two-out rally started for SUNY New Paltz with back-to-back singles in the opening frame. Sophomore designated hitter
Zach Warenius then drew a walk to load the bases, but the Hawks were unable to get on the board first and the College at Brockport escaped the top half of the first inning.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Anthony Amoroso got the start on the mound and was able to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the first with runners on first and third and one out. Amoroso was able to find the corner for a strikeout and then force a groundball to shortstop to keep the game knotted at zero.
The motto for the Hawks all year has been to answer back after giving up runs, and in the top of the third senior outfielder
Nick DePietro delivered an infield single to score
Ryan Frost and cut the Golden Eagles lead to 3-1. However, a double play with the next batter ended the inning and stranded two more runners for SUNY New Paltz.
Amoroso found his stride on the mound and was able to pitch through the fifth inning while only allowing one more hit.
The Hawks loaded up the bases again in the top of the 8
th inning as they trailed 5-1 and desperately needed some runs, but the College at Brockport was able to maintain its composure and pick up two key strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Junior right-handed pitcher
Ryan Votypka came on in relief for Amoroso in the sixth inning and was able to keep it a four-run game in the bottom of the eighth as he picked up a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz entered the ninth inning down four runs, but was able to load the bases with nobody out to put the pressure on the Golden Eagles. DePietro delivered his second RBI of the day on a fielder's choice, but the scoring ended there and the Hawks fell 5-2.
Williams and Moran led the offensive charge for SUNY New Paltz going for 3-for-4 and 3-for-5, respectively, while DePietro added the only two RBIs. Senior catcher
Dwayne Page also turned in a solid performance going 1-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases.
"It's unfortunate that we had the chance to sweep and couldn't pull it out," said Freeman. "We had a lot of timely hitting yesterday and not much at all today. There are a lot of positives to pull out from this weekend, but we also learned more about what we need to work on physically and mentally to make it through this conference."
The Hawks have a quick turn around and get back on their home field on Tuesday at 4 p.m. as they take one of the best in the country in No. 2 Rowan University. Be sure to follow @nphawks on Twitter and @newpaltzhawks on Instagram and Facebook for updates, highlights, videos, photos and more.
