Box Score New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team won its first game Saturday against Manhattanville College, with a final score of 1-0.
The lone goal was scored by senior Raven Blake, assisted by Nicole Sheintul in the 76th minute. Sheintul passed the ball from the wide right to Blake at center, who spun off an opponent and shot the ball into the goal.
"It feels great to score the first goal on our turf," said Blake. "I think we were successful today because we were able to connect our passes, especially in the second half. We were able to move off of the ball and make runs and charge the goal. We followed every single ball when it was put into the box, and luckily for us we got that win."
The Hawks (1-5) were hungry for a win after a close match Wednesday against Bard College, which resulted in a 1-0 loss. SUNY New Paltz recognized every opportunity given by Manhattanville, which it used to its advantage. The Valiants (1-4) were called on eight fouls, giving the Hawks the chance to progress onto their opponents side of the field and into their box.
"I felt as though it was deserving, certainly," said SUNY New Paltz coach Mike Eckberg about the victory. "The expectations are for them to regroup, understand that every game takes its own shape. You can't take any assumptions form one game to the next and understand that you have to come off ready to compete against a quality team tomorrow."
The Hawks and Valiants each made three shots on goal, but SUNY New Paltz held more success. The Hawks earned five corner kicks to Manhattanville's one, with freshman Danielle Angyal taking four for SUNY New Paltz, playing good services in.
"My expectations for tomorrow is another win," Blake said. "I think this win really fueled us and it's really going to come together tomorrow. We just have to come together and work together."
Megan Tornatore played all 90 minutes for the Hawks and made three saves in net.
