SUNY New Paltz now moves to 10-3 on the 2018 campaign. In dominating fashion, the Hawks only dropped one set throughout the four-game tournament.
"We were able to play a lot of quality teams with unique strengths and systems," said Hawks coach Matt Giufre. "That variety helps us for the next time we play against a similar opponent. We are definitely prepared for the pressure of SUNYAC play."
In a tight first set against Mount Aloysius, SUNY New Paltz took its first lead of the match off of a sophomore outside hitter Julie Greenspan kill, putting the Hawks in front 18-17. The point sparked their offense, scoring five unanswered points to take control. Kills by senior outside hitter Taylor Cimillo and sophomore middle hitter Demi Herasme sealed the set, as the SUNY New Paltz won, 25-18.
With the Hawks taking an early 7-3 lead in the second, the Mounties fought hard throughout, tying the set 14 different times. At 26-26, kills by Herasme and junior outside hitter Madison Van Pelt powered SUNY New Paltz through to a 28-26, victory.
Six unanswered points allowed the Hawks to jump out 9-2 early in the third set. Scoring in bunches, SUNY New Paltz commanded its way through to a 25-14 set win, earning the match 3-0.
Taking the momentum of game one with them against Ramapo College, the Hawks started the first set with a 6-1 lead. The Roadrunners crept back into the set at 12-10, but SUNY New Paltz continued to score rapidly. Seven-unanswered points ended the set 25-12, giving the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Ramapo took the lead four different times in the second set. At 18-17 Roadrunners, two kills by Cimillo, followed by two more from Greenspan, put the Hawks in front 21-18 and gave them the push they needed, ultimately winning the set, 25-21.
Not backing down, Ramapo tied the third set 10 different times. At 21-21, three Cimillo kills and a block by junior middle hitter Kerri Neville sealed the deal for SUNY New Paltz, winning the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.
"The veteran play and leadership on this team is outstanding," Guifre said. "Their calm demeanor allows us to make critical plays at critical times."
SUNY New Paltz returns to action Tuesday, as it travels to Danbury, CT to face Western Connecticut State.
