Cortland, NY -- The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 (8-25, 22-25, 16-25) Saturday by SUNY Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. The loss dropped the Hawks' record to 8-8 overall (3-2 SUNYAC), while the Red Dragons improved to 19-6 on the year (3-0 SUNYAC).
"We just didn't play well enough in any facet of the game," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Matt Giufre. "Cortland came out and served and swung with a lot of authority and we couldn't get anything going offensively with any consistency. There's days teams just have bad days. We will bounce back and be fine."
The Hawks scored the first point to start off set one, but SUNY Cortland tallied five straight points that caused Giufre to call his first timeout of the game. After the timeout, the Red Dragons continued to pile up points as SUNY Cortland's strong offense put them in front, 4-13. This forced SUNY New Paltz to use up its last timeout of the set, but the Red Dragons' momentum was too much for the Hawks, as blocks from Camryn Anderson and Hannah Southcott closed out set one, 8-25.
SUNY Cortland quickly jumped out to a 2-9 lead to open up set two, but SUNY New Paltz used several Red Dragons errors to its advantage. A service ace from junior
Haley Timarky, and a kill by senior
Maddie Van Pelt tied the set at nine. SUNY Cortland coach Erin Glickert called for her first timeout of the game and out of the break, the Red Dragons retook the lead once again, as a kill from Southcott put her team on top, 11-15, with the Hawks asking for a timeout. SUNY New Paltz was able to cut the foes lead, 19-22, as a kill from Van Pelt made SUNY Cortland utilize its final timeout of the set. However, the Red Dragons finished strong and claimed a 22-25 win.
Despite the Hawks building an early 4-1 advantage to begin the third set, SUNY Cortland came back and took a 4-8 lead. A kill from Anderson extended the foes lead 8-16 at the same time forcing SUNY New Paltz to give up a timeout. The Red Dragons comfortably closed out the final set with a kill by Nicole Van Pelt, which handed her team a 16-25 win and a 3-0 victory over the defending SUNYAC champions.
Maddie Van Pelt finished Saturday's matchup with eight kills and 8.5 points, while Timarky collected 21 assists. Senior
Nicole Fellone paced the Hawks with 11 digs.
SUNY New Paltz returns to the Hawk Center Oct. 11 and Oct. 12 for the first time since Sept. 7 to host the The College at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo, respectively.
