Binghamton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team ended the regular season with its second-straight 9-0 sweep Sunday after beating The College at Brockport.
After clinching their second-straight No. 1 seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs, the Hawks (7-1 overall, 7-0 SUNYAC) didn't let off the gas as they rolled to their sixth straight win and 15 consecutive conference victory dating back to last season.
With the way the other results ended Sunday, the top-seeded Hawks will take on No. 4 seed SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC semifinals. The winner of that game will face the winner of No. 2 SUNY Oneonta and No. 3 SUNY Geneseo in the championship game.
"Closed out the regular season with a 9-0 win," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Rob Bruley. "Very proud the way the team has performed over the fall season, but the job is not yet done as we move on to face Cortland in the conference semifinals next week."
Trinity Chow and
Laura Koob earned an 8-1 win at first doubles, while partners
Victoria Zezula and
Jenna Grandville, and
Onalee Batcheller and
Alexandra Dratch doubles each won 8-2 at second and third doubles, respectively.
Chow swept the Golden Eagles' Caroline Stewart at first singles with Koob earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles. Batcheller handily took the win at threes, 6-2, 6-0, while
Alex Chimenti earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fours.
Ava Sweeney and
Emma Messenger both collected 6-0, 6-3 wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively to round out the perfect game for the Hawks.
"Very pleased the way
Ava Sweeney and
Emma Messenger played in singles, making late season appearances in our singles lineup," Bruley said.
SUNY New Paltz will take on the Red Dragons for a SUNYAC semifinal matchup Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
