Starting the 2019 campaign with two road wins, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team looks to continue its success away from home when it travels to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Wednesday for a non-conference matchup.
Â
"It's big to start 2-0 with all the games that have been canceled. We were dying to get out there," said junior pitcher
Anthony Amoroso. "Some guys will get their first appearances [Wednesday] and get that out of the way so we'll have some experience going into Florida."Â

Â
With last year's game against the Mariners canceled due to inclement weather, the Hawks have not matched up with the United States Merchant Marine Academy in recent years. SUNY New Paltz hopes Wednesday's game can move the Hawks off to a hot start at 3-0 before they travel to Florida to begin State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play.
Â
The Mariners have played nine games this season, just coming off their spring break trip to Florida for the Acidic Classic in Fort Myers. The United States Merchant Marine Academy earned 4-3, 6-4 and 11-2 wins in three games against Hiram College, while also registering a 7-3 win against St. John's of Minnesota, a 7-1 win against Mitchell College and a 4-2 win against the United States Coast Guard Academy. The Mariners lost to Alvernia University 16-5, Otterbein University 3-2 and the Coast Guard Academy 9-8 in eight innings.
Â
The United States Merchant Marine Academy was successful in 2018, going 28-14 overall with an 11-7 record in the Skyline Conference. The Mariners season was cut short in the conference championship game, losing to St. Joseph's College of Long Island, 6-5.
Â
SUNY New Paltz will face off with the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY at 4 p.m. The Hawks will only travel with 20 men to the non-conference game.
"Every team I've been on we've had to take less guys than our opponents," said SUNY New Paltz senior outfielder
Danny Campbell. "I'd take our 20 guys over any team's 50 any day. We don't back down from anyone, however many guys we got we're going at it full speed."
