| By:
Box Score Lakeland, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team lost in its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game against Fredonia State, 19-1.

Junior pitcher Anthony Amoroso received the loss for the Hawks, pitching 3.2 innings, while giving up 11 hits, 10 runs and striking out three. Senior Luke Kuczewski earned the win for the Blue Devils, throwing a complete game with four hits, one earned run and 10 punch outs.

"We got beat. We got beat bad," said SUNY New Paltz coach Thomas Seay. "We just have to go play game two because that's all we can do."

Things turned sour for the Hawks early in the game after Kuczewski struck out the side in the top of the first inning. Fredonia came back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from junior outfielder Kevin Yirinec, giving the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead.

Another scoreless inning by SUNY New Paltz allowed Fredonia to come back with more pressure, gaining a two-run homer from sophomore infielder Kole Brink to go up 3-0. The Blue Devils continued to tack it on in the third after another RBI triple.

Senior first baseman Justin Ganca got the Hawks on the board in the top of the fourth inning, hitting an RBI double to score junior outfielder Julian Francisco to bring SUNY New Paltz behind, 4-1.

Fredonia put up a six spot in the bottom of the inning, going up 8-1 and taking full momentum in the game. The offensive onslaught continued into the fifth, with Yirinec going yard for the Blue Devils and another double, putting Fredonia up 14-1 to end the inning.

The Blue Devils scored two more in the sixth inning off walks with the bases loaded, with a two-RBI single extending their lead, 18-1. A sacrifice fly in the same inning sealed the win for Fredonia, playing the rest of the game with a comfortable lead at 19-1.

The Hawks travel to Auburndale, Florida to play game two and three of the SUNYAC series against the Blue Devils. Game two will begin at 10 a.m.

"I've been in this game long enough, games like that are going to happen," Seay said. "We're going to put our uniforms on, go on the bus, and play game two."
