Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Cortland, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team was swept by SUNY Cortland Saturday in a three-game State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) series, dropping game-two, 14-5 and game-three, 12-2.
SUNY New Paltz got a runner on in the top of the first inning in the first game against the Red Dragons after junior outfielder
Julian Francisco walked, but could not get a run across the board. SUNY Cortland came right back in the bottom of the inning with a run on a single and two on a throwing error to take the early 3-0 lead.
The Hawks had a runner on second base in the second inning, but could not drive the run in. The Red Dragons once again took full advantage, earning runs on two RBI doubles, a two RBI single and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to go up 8-0 early in the game.
Not giving up just yet, SUNY New Paltz came back in the top of the third inning with a crooked number, as Francisco got the scoring going with a RBI single through the right side. Senior outfielder
Danny Campbell and junior outfielder
Matt Warshaw added RBI singles to the cause, with Francisco also scoring on a passed ball to put the Hawks down, 8-4.
SUNY Cortland went scoreless in the bottom of the third inning, but SUNY New Paltz went a quick 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, setting the Red Dragons offense up for more. A home run, RBI single and miscue on a stealing play were enough for SUNY Cortland to extend the lead even further at 11-4.
A home run by sophomore first baseman
Dean Stalzer kept the Hawks heads up, but it would be the last run they scored in game-one of the doubleheader. The Red Dragons scored three more in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 14-5 victory and series win.
A senior leader, Campbell was not ready to let his team get swept in the first inning of the second game Saturday, driving in a RBI single to put SUNY New Paltz up first, 1-0. Both teams went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first and top of the second, but SUNY Cortland's offense finally got going in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on two singles and a sacrifice fly to take the lead back at 3-1.
The Hawks stayed close behind, scoring again in the top of the fourth inning on a freshman infielder Mike Boccarossa single to come behind, 3-2. The Red Dragons urgency was clear, as SUNY Cortland came right back that bottom half of the inning and scored nine runs to take the 12-2 lead. SUNY New Paltz had no answer, losing by that deciding score.
The Hawks will travel to Bard College Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference matchup. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow us on Twitter at @nphawks, Instagram and Facebook at @newpaltzhawks, and subscribe to our Youtube channel, New Paltz Hawks.
