Box Score 2 Fredonia, NY — After playing through a tough extra inning, 5-4 loss in game-one Saturday against Fredonia State, the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team made quick work during game-two, winning 12-1 in just five innings.
The Hawks (23-10 overall, 10-6 SUNYAC) were an out away from claiming a win in the opening game of their double header against the Blue Devils (12-19, 7-8).
Katie Quagliana forced two-straight ground outs to start the bottom of the seventh, but hosting Fredonia rallied to score three in the inning and tied the game at four.
Delana Thomas started the rally with a two-out single, which was followed with an RBI double by Karli Murray. An error on an errant throw at short scored Murray and the Blue Devils added on with back-to-back singles, the latter scored Fredonia's third run. Eva Fitzsimmo pushed across the game-tying run for the Blue Devils, but the offense in the inning stalled there, as Quagliana forced another groundout to get out of the inning to leave the bases loaded.
SUNY New Paltz had the opportunity to re-gain the lead in the top of the eighth.
Shannon Fee earned a base after a throwing error to lead off the inning.
Julia DiSpigna then reached after another errant throw by the Blue Devils, but the Hawks couldn't capitalize with two on and no outs with the Blue Devils recording three-straight outs, as Quagliana struk out,
Taylor LaFrance fouled out and
Caroline Alicandri batted into a fielder's choice.
Emily Fox took over in the eighth in the circle for Quagliana. The Blue Devils laid down a bunt to advance a runner to third. After a walk and a fielder's choice, another error plated the game-winning run for Fredonia.
The Hawks didn't dwell on the loss, however, and jumped out early in game-two. Quagliana opened up the game with a lead-off single to left. DiSpigna advanced Quagliana to second on a sacrifice bunt and
Ashley Puig batted her in on an RBI double a batter later.
After one run in the first, SUNY New Paltz broke the game open in the second with five runs.
Kelsey Trudden got on after dropped third strike and was later brought home, along with
Shannon Fee following a single, from a two-RBI double by Quagliana. DiSpigna then capped off the offensive onslaught with a three-run home run blast to bring the Hawks' lead to 6-0.
SUNY New Paltz added two more runs in the third and fourth and officially put away the game in the fifth, scoring four more to bring its lead to 12-0.
Nikki Bowen registered her first career home run to round out the scoring for the Hawks.
Both games were sloppy in the field. Game-one totaled four errors for SUNY New Paltz and six errors on the Blue Devils, while the two teams combined for three errors in game-two.
Fox earned the win in game-two, giving up just three hits with six strikeouts in five innings pitched. Quagliana led the Hawks at the plate, hitting 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored, followed by
Nina Simms, who it 3-for-7 with two runs.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Sunday in a doubleheader against Buffalo State. If the Hawks win just a game over the Bengals they guarantee a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs.
