Fox Throws Two-Hitter in 2-0 Shutout, Helping SUNY New Paltz Softball to Series Split With Oswego

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oswego, NY – After getting shutout 8-0 in game one of its double header Saturday, the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team bounced back and jumped out early in game two, resulting in a 2-0 shutout victory of its own to earn a series split with hosting Oswego State.

"In between games we just talked about forgetting that game, flushing it out of our systems and moving on to the next," said Hawks coach Krysti Maronski.

Emily Fox earned the game two start and was given two quick runs of offensive support, which was all she needed to notch her fourth win and sixth complete game of the season.

SUNY New Paltz put a run on the board to start the first inning with Taylor LaFrance getting the offense started with a one-out single through the left side. She eventually was brought home on a pair of errors in the follow at-bat with Meagan Blair reaching first on an errant throw, while LaFrance used her speed to take advantage on throwing miscues to advance to second and then third.

Ashley Puig finally brought LaFrance home with an RBI single to center to tally the game's first run. The Hawks couldn't pile on, however, despite having Blair and Puig safely on first and second with just one out. The Lakers recorded two straight ground-outs to limit the damage.

SUNY New Paltz added another run in the following inning. Kelsey Trudden led off with a double to left field. A ground out, followed by a SAC bunt by Madison Rappold and Julia DiSpigna, respectively, advanced Trudden to third, putting her in scoring position for freshman Katie Quagliana. Quagliana then delivered with a two-out RBI single to center, scoring Trudden and creating a slight cushion for the Hawks.

LaFrance earned a walked on the next at-bat, but again, SUNY New Paltz couldn't add to its lead and settled for the lone run after leaving both LaFrance and Quagliana on base following a ground-out to end the top of the inning.

"At the plate we just need to relax," Maronski said. "We're pressuring way too much and need to just see the ball and make solid contact."

Fox and the Hawks' defense took over from then on. The closest Oswego came to threaten the lead was in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Lakers advanced runners to second and third on a wild pitch with just one out, but Fox regrouped to strikeout the following two batters and strand runners in scoring position. Two straight 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh finally closed out the victory.

Fox gave up just two hits in the outing, striking out six and allowed just two walks in seven innings pitched.

SUNY New Paltz showed its resilience in the comeback win after dropping a tough game one. Quagliana has proven to be the Hawks' best arm, pitching to a conference-leading eight wins through eight starts, but was hit early against the Lakers.

Oswego took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a two-run home run by Angela Frampton. The score remained there until the sixth inning when Oswego broke the game open with a six-run inning, ultimately run-ruling the game at six innings.

Quagliana gave up three-straight hits to start the inning, allowing two more runs before Alyssa Pfitscher came in for relief. Unfortunately, Pfitscher had trouble getting out of the jam, allowing an RBI double, a two RBI double, followed by an RBI single before earning the third out of the inning.
While Oswego put up 12 hits in game one, SUNY New Paltz struggled getting anything going offensively, finishing with just three hits in the game. Blair, Quagliana and Katie Conrad were the only Hawks to register a hit in the game.

Quagliana took just her second loss of the season after throwing five innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs with one strikeout.

SUNY New Paltz is back in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Sunday, competing in a double header against perennial conference contender SUNY Cortland.

"Tomorrow we have to go out just like every other day and play one pitch at a time and have fun," Maronski said.
