Celebrating senior day, The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team will take on New Jersey City University Wednesday for its last game of the season.
Â
The Hawks will be honoring seven seniors finishing their career on Loren Campbell Field. Outfielder
Danny Campbell, first baseman
Justin Ganca, shortstop
Ryan Frost and pitchers
Michael Delio,
James Magnuson,
Justin Stybel and
Ryan Votypka will all be graduating this year.
"I'm very appreciative for my time here at New Paltz," Stybel said. "What means the most to me are the friendships that I've been lucky enough to form with my teammates. I'm going to cherish these memories forever. I'm just so incredibly thankful for my career as a Hawk."
Â
SUNY New Paltz has never matched up with New Jersey City University in the program's history. The Hawks will have one last opportunity to boost their overall record of 13-18 after finishing last in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with a mark of 5-13.
Â
Coming off a strong weekend, SUNY New Paltz will look to use the momentum gained from its series with Plattsburgh State to take home a win. The Hawks grabbed a 2-1 series win, knocking the Cardinals out of playoff contention with 16-3 and 8-7 wins in game-one and game-three, respectively, while losing game-two 11-6.
Â
New Jersey City University did not make the postseason either this year, playing a doubleheader with St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on the road Tuesday before its matchup with SUNY New Paltz. The Gothic Knights currently hold an overall record of 14-20 on the season, finishing 3-15 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Currently on a four-game losing streak before Tuesday, New Jersey City University is 4-11 on the road this year.
Â
The Hawks will meet the Gothic Knights at 4 p.m. Wednesday on Loren Campbell Field, hoping to send the seniors off with a memorable victory.
Â
"Coming into New Paltz as a transfer I didn't know what to expect for the coming years," Ganca said. "I was welcomed with open arms into the family we have here and I couldn't be happier with the lifelong friends I've made. I've greatly enjoyed my last three years and hope I've made a positive impact on the younger guys and the future of this program."
