Box Score New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team ended its season Wednesday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to New Jersey City University.
Before the game, the Hawks took a moment to recognize their seven seniors graduating this year in pitchers
James Magnuson,
Ryan Votypka,
Justin Stybel and
Michael Delio, shortstop
Ryan Frost, first baseman
Justin Ganca and outfielder
Danny Campbell. Unfortunately, SUNY New Paltz could not send the group off with one last win. The Hawks end their season with an overall record of 13-19 and a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) record of 5-13.
Magnuson set a solid tone for SUNY New Paltz in the top of the first inning, mowing New Jersey City University down 1-2-3 to get the Hawks in the dugout. SUNY New Paltz had an opportunity with one out to drive in junior outfielder
Matthew McGee after he singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but left the runner on base.
Staying in a groove, Magnuson shut the Gothic Knights down in both the second and third inning with both innings going 1-2-3. The Hawks unfortunately went 1-2-3 in both innings as well, allowing New Jersey City University to hold momentum slightly headed into the fourth.
The Gothic Knights scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning off an RBI single after an error and a sacrifice fly. Magnuson got out of the jam with a strikeout, but the damage was done for New Jersey City University, as it gained a 2-0 advantage.
After SUNY New Paltz left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Gothic Knights earned another run off a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Hawks continued to leave runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, with both freshman second baseman
Michael Boccarossa and junior outfielder
Julian Francisco singling, but no one could drive them in.
With New Jersey City University earning a single to lead off the top of the sixth, SUNY New Paltz coach
Thomas Seay turned to Stybel to keep the Hawks in the game. He allowed an RBI single to his first batter to allow the Gothic Knights to go up 4-0, but kept the damage at that to get out of the inning.
SUNY New Paltz left a runner on base in the sixth and seventh, and left two more on in the eighth and ninth. New Jersey City University put the final touches on its win with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to go up 5-0, and the Hawks never had an answer.
Magnuson earned the loss for SUNY New Paltz, pitching five innings, while allowing five hits and four runs. The Hawks had five hits on the day, but their three errors proved costly in the loss.
