Scranton, PA — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team traveled to Scranton, PA Friday and dropped its season opener against hosting University of Scranton. The Hawks fall to 0-1 overall (0-0 SUNYAC) while the Royals improve to 1-0 overall (0-0 Landmark).
SUNY New Paltz had a rough start and lost the first set 18-25, but the Hawks later came back and took set two, winning 25-22. However, SUNY New Paltz wasn't able to hold onto the lead several times in the third and fourth sets, falling 18-25 and 23-25 respectively.
"We need to work on every aspect of our game heading into tomorrow and our ability to be resilient when we make a bad play" said Hawks coach
Matt Giufre of his team's performance. "We were completely out played tonight. We look forward to coming back tomorrow and taking a step forward in consistency and overall quality of play. We have the talent to do it, but we need to do it under adversity."
Senior outside hitter
Madison Van Pelt finished with 12 kills and led the team with 14 points. Junior middle hitter
Demi Herasme had five kills with a .308 hitting percentage and led the Hawks with four blocks. Meanwhile, junior setter
Haley Timarky paced SUNY New Paltz with 14 assists followed by junior setter
Caleigh Carr, who finished with 11 assists of her own. In addition, senior libero
Nicole Fellone led the way with 19 digs and junior libero
Olivia D'Antonio recorded six aces.
On the other hand for Scranton, junior setter Kindler Norman marked 30 assists for the Royals. Senior defensive specialist Kristin Bush noted 11 digs. Freshman setter Caileigh Cox recorded 10 kills.
SUNY New Paltz is looking to capture its first win of the season Saturday in the final day of the Scranton Invitational as it takes on U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Rochester Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
