Utica, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team registered 12 shots and earned 15 corners before finally knocking in the go-ahead goal against St. Lawrence University in the second day of the Utica College Invitational Saturday.
After rolling to a 4-1 win Friday in their season opener, the Hawks (2-0) once again had a dominating performance, as the majority of the game was played on the Saints' defensive half of the field, but SUNY New Paltz struggled to translate its chances into goals. Finally, at the start of the fourth quarter, junior forward
Carly Croteau gave the Hawks the advantage after impressively dribbling through a couple defenders on her way inside the circle before putting her shot past St. Lawrence goalie Sydney Giacin to put her team up, 1-0.
"Throughout the game we were persistent and eventually capitalized," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Shanna Szablinski. "This weekend was where we needed to be. I am really proud of our relentless effort and conscious effort the entire duration of both games."
The Saints were limited in their opportunities on offense and totaled just one shot during the game, while SUNY New Paltz recorded 16, nine of which were on goal with 16 corners in the game.
Despite the advantage on penalty corners, the Hawks couldn't take advantage on the set play.
Morgan Gunter solidified the win with an insurance goal in the run of play with about five minutes left in the fourth quarter after putting away an unassisted goal right in front of the cage to record her first score of the year.
Jessica Ascencao led SUNY New Paltz with six shots, followed by Gunter,
Carly Croteau and
Rachel Beam who each registered two apiece.
Ryan Dowling played all 60 minutes in goal for the Hawks and was not tested.
SUNY New Paltz has a quick turnaround before its next game, as the Hawks will head back to New Paltz to face a tough Montclair State team in their home opener Wednesday at 4 p.m. hoping to keep their undefeated season alive.
"Defensively we stayed poised and that helped us tremendously to continuously drive to the cage," Szablinski added. "Leading up to Wednesday game we will emphasize executing on corners, defensive and attacking circle play."
