SUNY New Paltz Tennis Suffers First Loss of the Season at Home Against RPI

New Paltz, NY--- The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis lost its first match of the season and home opener against RPI, 8-1 Wednesday.

While the 8-1 loss seemed like a large margin, every match was close and the Hawks were not discouraged by the outcome.

There were two tie breakers, with RPI taking both (8-7) against SUNY New Paltz first doubles' Trinity Chow and Laura Koob, and second doubles' Victoria Zezula and Jenna Grandville.

Koob was the sole winner of the day for the Hawks, as she won her singles match, 6-4, 6-0.

"We fought hard out there. It gives us a lesson to learn for next time," Koob said.  "We are going to be ready to play SUNYAC schools.  It was great practice to play against such great players."

SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley also stayed positive after the loss, knowing the potential of his team and what they are capable of, especially when the Hawks re-enter SUNYAC play.

"You look at the score and it looks like we were beaten up, but this is a very good team, so I was pleased by the way we played," Bruley said.  "But it's hard to be upset, everyone gave 100 percent and at the end of the day, we were beaten by the better team.  You look at the scores and each match was really close. This is good preparation for the upcoming SUNYAC championship."

Next up for the weekend, SUNY New Paltz will travel to Poughkeepsie for the Vassar Scramble on Saturday and Sunday.
