The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team will head to the Big Apple Sept. 12 to battle Hunter College in a non-conference matchup.
"Hunter's record is a bit misleading," said Hawks coach Matt Giufre. "They've lost a couple really close five set matches. ...they have a really well-balanced team offensively and defensively. It's going to take a complete performance from everyone to put ourselves in position to win. I'm looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to continue to grow as a team."
SUNY New Paltz (4-3, 0-0 SUNYAC) is currently on a four-game winning streak after walking out undefeated in this year's annual Hawks Invitational.
Senior outside hitter Madison Van Pelt currently leads the team with 66 kills. Junior setter Haley Timarky guides the Hawks with 204 assists, while senior libero Nicole Fellone paces SUNY New Paltz with 97 digs and 14 service aces. In addition, junior middle hitter Demi Herasme leads the way with 16 blocks. The Hawks will look to improve their .157 hitting percentage.
On the other hand, Hunter College is currently 2-3 (0-0 CUNYAC) on the season with its latest victory recorded on Sept. 10 against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The purple and yellow Hawks are coached by Alyssa Broccoli, who assisted Giufre during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Hunter College is led by Kylie Hurst with 12 service aces and 68 kills, along with Justine Smith who has a team-high 147 assists. Sunghee Cho is at the top defensively with 98 digs. The purple and yellow Hawks are coming into the matchup with a .133 hitting percentage.
The last time SUNY New Paltz faced off against Hunter College was during the 2018 season, which saw the Hawks come out with a 3-0 win. SUNY New Paltz currently has six wins and one loss against Hunter. It's only loss came from the 2017 season, falling 3-1.
First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Hunter Sportsplex.
