Pittsford, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz couldn't climb out of a 5-0 deficit Saturday on the road against St. John Fisher College (4-0 overall). The Hawks (3-3) answered with two goals late in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough and they ultimately came away with a 5-2 loss.
The game was scoreless until Lindsay Scott gave the Cardinals the lead a minute into the second quarter. St. John Fisher took a one-goal advantage into halftime, but started piling on in the second half with two more goals in third and fourth quarters, respectively.
SUNY New Paltz out-shot the Cardinals, however, in the final 15 minutes, 10-3.
Jessica Ascencao finally broke through for the Hawks with five minutes remaining on an unassisted score.
Shannon Bernhardt followed up with another SUNY New Paltz goal with less than four minutes remaining.
Jamie Wagner was credited on the assist.
Both teams finished with 16 shots. The Hawks had slightly more on target, 10-9. SUNY New Paltz also held the advantage on corners, 7-5.
Ryan Dowling earned the start, playing just more than 50 minutes and made three saves, while
Mackenzie Mortimer came in for relief, didn't make a stop, but also didn't allow any goals against.
Hawks are back home Wednesday when they face another tough opponent in Skidmore College on the North Turf Field at 4 p.m.
