The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team will look to earn its sixth straight victory Tuesday as it prepares to open up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta.
"Oneonta is off to a good start and will present a challenge tomorrow," said Hawks coach Matt Giufre on Oneonta's start to
the season. "They are a tough serving team and very strong at scoring from the middle. Their defense keeps a lot of rallies alive and we are going to have to play a clean match to have the opportunity to win."
The Hawks most recently collected a 3-1 win over Hunter College Sept. 12. SUNY New Paltz enters the contest with a 5-3 overall record, while the Red Dragons are 9-3 on the season. SUNY Oneonta is also riding a five-game winning streak after coming out unbeaten at the Wells College Invitational Sept. 13 and Sept. 14, defeating Wells College, Keuka College and Lebanon Valley College.
The Hawks have taken wins over the Red Dragons for the past four games, including one postseason victory during the 2017 season. SUNY New Paltz will look to make it five-straight wins Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Maddie Van Pelt leads the Hawks offensively with 80 kills and 86.5 points. Junior setter Haley Timarky paces SUNY New Paltz with 249 assists, while senior libero Nicole Fellone sits on top with 112 digs and 16 service aces. Junior libero Olivia D'Antonio is right behind Fellone with 14 service aces. The Hawks will look to rise its .175 hitting percentage.
As for the foes, Gillian Stieglitz leads SUNY Oneonta with 124 kills. Jessica Fowler leads the Red Dragons with 348 assists and 30 service aces. Lindsay Pelaccio has 198 digs, while Clara Culeton has contributed 41 blocks thus far. SUNY Oneonta go into the match with a .229 hitting percentage.
First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Dewar Arena.
