Hoboken, NJ -- The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team concluded the Ducks Classic Saturday with two losses coming from the hosts, Stevens Institute of Technology, and Cabrini University. The Hawks drop to 5-7 on the year (0-1 SUNYAC).
"In the Stevens match, we didn't do anything to challenge them or put up a fight," said SUNY New Paltz coach Matt Giufre. "In the Cabrini match, we got strong contributions from a number of our younger
players, but ultimately came up short. We will get back to practice this week and work hard to be ready for two important conference matches this weekend."
In the matchup against the Ducks, the Hawks struggled to seize a set from Stevens, falling 21-25, 19-25, and 13-25.
Senior Nicole Fellone completed the game with 16 digs and two service aces. Senior Kerri Neville tallied five kills, one service ace, one block and a hitting percentage of .444. Junior Haley Timarky collected 21 assists, while senior Maddie Van Pelt paced SUNY New Paltz with 11 kills.
On the other hand for Stevens, Casey King managed to gather 10 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks. Kathleen Riegner led the foes with 30 assists, nine digs and two service aces. Furthermore, Sara Hain had nine kills and two blocks.
The Ducks demonstrated a stronger offense with a hitting percentage of .202 whereas SUNY New Paltz finished with a .121 hitting percentage.
The Hawks dropped a tight 3-2 game in the finale against the Cavaliers. The final scores of each set were 16-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, and 16-18, respectively.
The game leaders for SUNY New Paltz saw freshman Makenzie Bills on top with 13 kills and right behind her was Neville with 10 of her own. Timarky added another 39 digs to close out the tournament. Freshman Mia Waddell grabbed 18 digs and five assists to add to her name.
As for Cabrini, both Katrina Shelly and Steph Judkins tied with 19 kills each. The foes concluded the match with a .203 hitting percentage in comparison to the Hawks' .183 hitting percentage.
SUNY New Paltz remains on the road to continue SUNYAC play Sept. 27 and Sept. 28 to battle Fredonia and Buffalo State, respectively. The Hawks will seek to demolish its four-game losing streak.
