Varner and Maltes Lead SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer to 4-0 Win Over Farmingdale

Farmingdale, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz collected its second-straight win Saturday in convincing fashion after defeating hosting Farmingdale State, 4-0.

"Overall it was a good team effort in the attack and at times really good pressure as a unit," said Hawks coach Kyle Clancy. "If we clean up a few things in the back we will be a tough team to score on."

SUNY New Paltz had a slow start to the season offensively. Although it has created ample chances in the offensive third, the Hawks have had trouble finishing on opportunities. They worked on finishing all week leading into practice and that showed Saturday. They totaled 10 shots on frame and four found the back of the net. Freshman Philip Varner and sophomore James Maltes led the way, scoring two goals apiece.

"We spent a lot of time this week working on the final third and finishing, so it was good to see us create a lot of chances and to see both James and Phil be clinical with finishing," Clancy said. "They are playing with a lot of confidence and are contributing in a number of ways, but the excellent runs and finishing are always great things to see."

The Hawks didn't take long to get on the board. Luke Dole set up James Maltes for his fourth goal of the season just two minutes into the first half. Philip Varner doubled up on the SUNY New Paltz lead just more than a minute later with Tommy Jelstrom and Kevin Doorley aiding Varner on his first collegiate goal.

In the 14th minute Maltes piled on to the lead, scoring his second and pushing the cushion to 3-0, which held at the half.

After a dominating opening 45 minutes where the Hawks out-shot the Rams, 13-5, the second half was more evenly matched with SUNY New Paltz having the slight edge on chances, 6-5. Despite the slight dip in play, the Hawks still took advantage of their opportunities and added another insurance goal five minutes into the second half. Varner scored his second with Doorley contributing with his second assist of the day.

Marc DePasquale earned the start and made three saves in about 61 minutes of action for the Hawks. Zack Decker finished the outing and also contributed three saves in 29 minutes.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday when it hosts Albertus Magnus on the South Turf Field at 4 p.m.
