SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Roll to 6-1 SUNYAC Road Win over Oswego State

Oswego, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz rolled to a 6-1 win over hosting Oswego State Saturday to open up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Saturday.

Jessica Ascencao was the catalyst for the Hawks (6-3 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC). The Lakers (3-5, 1-1) had no answers for the reigning SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, as Ascecnao was involved in five of six goals for SUNY New Paltz.

"Jessie was dominant and unstoppable moving through defenders and getting multiple opportunities inside our attacking end," said Hawks coach Shanna SzablinskiJessica Ascencao GIF

SUNY New Paltz owned the first 15 minutes, playing the majority of the time in Oswego's defensive 25. The Hawks totaled nine shots and four corners and finally broke through with about two minutes remaining in the period. Off a corner taken by Jamie Wagner, Ascencao received a pass from Morgan Gunter and rocketed a shot in the back of the net to put her team out in front.

The Lakers saw the most success early in the second quarter, tallying their first corner, shot, and eventually opening goal of the game. With the score knotted, SUNY New Paltz regrouped and Ascencao took it upon herself to put the Hawks back in front with four minutes left before the half.

SUNY New Paltz took over in the second half and piled onto the score. Shannon Bernhardt capitalized off another Hawks corner with about six minutes left in the third. Wagner and Ascencao was credited with the assists on the play. Bernhardt then aided another score about three minutes later, blasting a shot toward Lakers goalie Erica Scheblein. Her shot was blocked, but Carly Croteau picked up the rebound and found Natasia Plunkett for the score.

Ascencao pushed the lead to 5-1 two minutes into the fourth quarter, dribbling past multiple Oswego defenders before finding the left corner for the goal. She then assisted Erin Weimann who put away one last insurance goal for the Hawks a minute left in the outing.

"It took us a little to get our momentum going in our attacking end," Szablinski said. "Once our mids started driving hard into the lanes, we were able to execute."

SUNY New Paltz out-shot Oswego, 42-3 in the game, including 21-2 on goal, and had 18 corners to the Lakers' 4.

Mackenzie Mortimer made one save in 60 minutes, while Scheblein totaled 15 stops.

The Hawks are back on the road Sept. 28 hoping to earn their second SUNYAC win of the year, facing The College at Brockport at 1 p.m.
