Fredonia, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered its sixth-straight loss Friday, falling to hosting Fredonia State in Dods Hall, 97-80.
The Hawks (5-16 overall, 1-13 SUNYAC), let up a season-high in points and struggled limiting the Blue Devils from the perimeter, as the hosts shot nearly 60 percent from distance after making 13-of-22 attempts.
Fredonia opened up with a 46-39 first half lead after shooting 45 percent in the first 20 minutes of the game. SUNY New Paltz stayed tight with help from its hot-hand from the perimeter, as they knocked down 5-of-7 from distance.
RJ Meyers-Turner,
Jake Passaretti,
Scott Reisert,
Tristan Wissemann and
Brandon Scott all hit shots from 3-point land to get SUNY New Paltz within seven at the break.
Passaretti and Reisert helped swing some momentum toward the Hawks to begin the second half of play, as consecutive made buckets trimmed the difference to four within the first minute. However, the Blue Devils countered with a made 3-pointer in the corner, as they pushed in transition to find open looks from behind the arc. They hit two more from the perimeter and went on a quick 9-0 run after three made shots, which got the cushion to 10 just two minutes later.
Reisert put an end to the unanswered stretch, getting to the basket and earning a trip to the foul line where he made both attempts to cut the deficit to eight. The Blue Devils answered once again with a bucket by Moussa Samassa in the paint to get the lead back to double-figures, which also instigated a 7-0 stretch that allowed Fredonia to remain ahead by double-digits the rest of the way.
Although the Hawks shot efficiently from behind the arc at 50 percent (8-16), they made just 39 percent from the field, while scoring a bulk of their points at the charity stripe where they made 24-of-27 attempts.
Reisert paced the team with 13 points, five rebounds and a block in 28 minutes. Passaretti and Wissemann followed with 12 points apiece, with Passaretti adding a team-high five assists, while Wissemann pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
The Hawks are back on the floor Saturday when they travel to Buffalo State to take on the Bengals for a 4 p.m. matchup in Sports Arena.
