The State University of New York at New Paltz is taking a look back at some of the best games of the past two decades, and next up is the 2008 NCAA Women's Volleyball Regional Final between the Hawks and Fredonia State.
After falling to the Blue Devils in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in straight sets a week earlier, SUNY New Paltz had another shot at Fredonia in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks, ultimately finishing the season at 32-10 overall, earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament and opened up with a 3-0 win over Hunter College before defeating Union College, 3-1 to get to the regional final against the Blue Devils.
After falling in a tight first set, 24-26, SUNY New Paltz fought to tie up the match after a 24-23 second-set victory. Fredonia needed to extend the third once again to get the win, 24-26, but the Hawks rolled in the fourth stanza, 25-14 to force a deciding fifth set.
The Hawks advanced to their first and only national quarterfinal in program history with the victory to take on the University of La Verne in Bloomington, Illinois where their illustrious 2008 season ultimately came to an end. Stephanie Bova, Brittany Coyle, Melinda DiGiovanna and Nicole Mercadante were all named First-Team All-SUNYAC, and Samantha Prudente Second-Team All-SUNYAC following the 2008 season with Coyle also earning AVCA All-Region honorable mention honors.
