Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) released its weekly awards Monday with Hawks junior centerback
Katie Buquicchio earning her first SUNYAC/PrestoSports Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week honors.
Buquicchio becomes the third Hawk to be named to the weekly accolade, as teammates
Jess Funke and
Sky Pedroza each earned the Defensive and Offensive Athlete of the Week honor, respectively.
Buquicchio helped SUNY New Paltz secure the fourth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament this past weekend by playing every minute of action in a pair of overtime games against Oswego State and SUNY Cortland, respectively. She logged a full 96 minutes in a 2-1 extra time win over the Lakers Oct. 22 and then played 110 minutes of a 2-2 double overtime tie against the Red Dragons. Buquicchio scored both of the Hawks goals in the match to not only hold down the backline but also become the catalyst offensively with her prowess in the air, scoring off headers from corners played in by freshman midfielder
Emma Voege.
Buquicchio has scored four goals in as many games and currently leads all defenders in the SUNYAC in points. She and SUNY New Paltz begin postseason play Saturday on the South Turf Field at 1 p.m. against Fredonia State.
