New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Department hosted a late-night intramural 6v6 volleyball tournament Tuesday night in Elting Gym, with nine teams competed for the coveted Intramural Sports Championship t-shirt.
 
The double elimination tournament had 62 participants among nine teams with nearly two dozen students in attendance throughout the night to watch and cheer on their favorite intramural teams. With the tournament beginning at 9 p.m. the competition went on for nearly six hours, ending just before 3 a.m. to decide the winner with team Kiss My Ace, made up of Yinaira Piña, Kunga Chodon, Liel Guetta, David Lin, Michael Morris, Ruany Soca and John Zumel, took the home bragging rights and the coveted championship t-shirts.
 
Other winners on the day included the Speedo Spikers, who were awarded Hawks rally towels for earning the best team name of the tournament and team This Isn't Rugby? who also earned rally towels for earning best team uniform of the tournament.
 
 
With the success Tuesday night brought, the hope is to host more late night programing both this semester and next. Already on the docket is a 4v4 basketball tournament Dec. 7 with two more late-night tournaments set to be scheduled in spring 2022.
 
"I think the late-night tournament went very well," said Hawks Wellness & Recreation Assistant Director, Aquatics Director and Intramural Sports Commissioner Kevin Makarewicz who put the tournament together. "There were nine teams that competed with plenty of teams bringing spectators to watch. I want to thank all the participants who came out for the tournament and especially want to thank my intramural staff for putting on such a great event. Without them none of this would be able to run. I look forward to the 4v4 late-night tournament on 12/7 and also offering two late-night tournaments in the spring 2022 semester.
