Oneonta, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team fell on the road to SUNY Oneonta Saturday, 17-8, putting an end to a two-game winning streak.
The Hawks (2-2 overall, 2-2 SUNYAC) came off back-to-back blowout victories against SUNY Potsdam after opening up the year with a tight battle against perennial program, SUNY Cortland. They fell against the Red Dragon, 18-17, but their offense in all three contests this season has delivered. That wasn't the case Wednesday, as SUNY New Paltz struggled to get on the board in the first half.
Playing without second leading scorer in senior attacker
Tara Bovich, the Hawks had their lowest output of the young season. The Red Dragons (2-0, 2-0) took the lead just 40 seconds after the opening draw and added seven unanswered goals within the next seven minutes to take a commanding lead.
Shannon Brosnan stalled the Red Dragons run with an unassisted goal with about 22 minutes left in the half, but Oneonta answered three minutes later to push its cushion back to seven.
Amy Hofer scored on an unassisted goal with about 13 minutes left on her fourth attempt of the day with
Kaitlyn Shaw adding on two minutes later on a feed from Brosnan. The Red Dragons weren't done in the half, however, and added three more before the half to take a 11-3 lead at the break.
SUNY New Paltz played better in the following 30 minutes, only allowing the Red Dragons to find the back of the net six times, while its offense was more efficient in finding the back of the net.
Camryn Ryder, answered for the Hawks after two more goals to start the second half for Oneonta.
Keydy Espinoza then added the team's fifth of the afternoon after finishing on a pass from
Katie Zito. They ended the game with three-straight goals, but at that point the game was virtually put away. Ryder scored her second of the afternoon off an assist by Brosnan and Hofer added another nearly two minutes later before she capped off the day for SUNY New Paltz with a free position goal with about four minutes left.
Despite the lopsided score, the team stats were close across the board. The Red Dragons held a slight advantage on shots (30-25), turnovers (20-22) and draw controls (15-12), while the Hawks had more ground ball pickups (19-17) and less turnovers (20-22) than their opposition.
Hofer once again paced SUNY New Paltz's offense, as she finishd with three goals on 11 shots, but went just 2-for-7 on free position opportunities. Ryder followed with two goals on three attempts, while also adding a ground ball pick up. Brosnan chipped in with one goal and two assists, including a team-high six draw control wins.
Hailey Aber played the majority of the game in goal for SUNY New Paltz, making four saves, while
Haley Timarky played the last eight-plus minutes, but didn't see a shot on frame.
The Hawks have a quick turnaround, as they will look to regroup Monday when they visit Plattsburgh for a 4 p.m. matchup.
