SUNY New Paltz Baseball Lose Both Doubleheader Games at Cortland

Cortland, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz fight back to nearly steal a game against SUNY Cortland Saturday.

The Hawks (4-6 overall, 2-6 SUNYAC) were blow out by the Red Dragons (13-3, 4-0) in game one, 17-1, but fought to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The hosts had a rally of their own however, and took game two as well, 4-3.

After getting out-hit 22-2 in game one, SUNY New Paltz showed some grit in the second game of the doubleheader and matched the Red Dragons hit-for-hit with six apiece.

Cortland held a 1-0 advantage until the Hawks tied up the score in the top of the fourth after a solo home run by Jesse Keshner. They took the lead in the top of the sixth with Keshner starting off with a leadoff walk. A fielding error allowed Nick Harvey to arrive safely on base and Matt McGee followed with a single to center to load the bases with no outs. Back-to-back strikeouts nearly cost SUNY New Paltz runs, but Matt Laurelli came through with a two-out, two RBI single to drive home Harvey and Keshner and give his team a 3-1 lead.

The Red Dragons answered in the bottom half of the inning. Bobby Ramsey hit Cortland's leadoff batter and a batter later that runner cost them after Cortland drove him in with a one-out double. Ryan Geraghty came into pitch for Ramsey, but he couldn't limit the damage. The Red Dragons drove in a runner on a single through the left side and took the lead on a two-out single a batter later.

SUNY New Paltz couldn't respond in the last inning, as Cortland got three-straight outs to end the game with the one-run win.

Keshner went 1-for-2 in the game with two runs, an RBI and a walk. McGee went 2-for-3. Ramsey played well in his first start of the season for the Hawks, as he went 5.1 innings, giving up just four hits, three earned runs, two walks with four strikeouts.

The Hawks and Red Dragons see each other again Sunday as they complete their home-and-home at Loren Campbell Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
