New Paltz, NY — After visiting Cortland Saturday for a doubleheader, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team hosted the Red Dragons Sunday to complete its home-and-home series at Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
The results were similar to Saturday's, as the Hawks struggled to keep up with Cortland in game one, losing 17-1, but played competitively in game two and had a solid outing from ace
Anthony Amoroso. Offense continued to struggle, however, and SUNY New Paltz lost game two, 5-1.
The Hawks (4-8 overall, 2-8 SUNYAC) combined for seven hits on the day, while the Red Dragons (15-3, 6-0) compiled 22 hits in game one and seven more in game two.
Billy Moeller went two innings in the first game and earned the loss, while Amoroso went 6.2 innings, gave up seven hits and four earned runs, while striking out six.

SUNY New Paltz scored its lone run in the game one in the fourth inning.
Nick Harvey struck a one-out single to center and stole second a batter later.
Matthew McGee drove him in with a hard-hit double to the right field gap to make the score, 9-1. Cortland piled on with two more runs in the fifth, one in the seventh and another in the eighth before a big ninth inning where it plated four to put the game well out of reach.
The Red Dragons were propelled by a big third inning in game two. After allowing just one hit in the first two innings, Amoroso allowed four hits in the third. He got Cortland's leadoff hitter out on a fly to
Ryan Geraghty in centerfield, but the Red Dragons registered a single in their next at-bat. The following batter reached on a grounder that was mishandled by
Matt Laurelli at short and the momentum swung from there. An RBI double by Colin Bevard was followed by a passed ball that allowed another run to score and placed Bevard on third. Ben Rhodes batted in Bevard before Laurelli turned a double play to end the inning, as Cortland held onto a 4-0 lead.
The Red Dragons took a five-run cushion into the fifth after adding another in the top of the fourth but the Hawks answered in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a couple Cortland miscues.
Justin Ortiz got the offense going, getting hit by the first pitch he saw and then advancing into scoring position on a passed ball. Geraghty drove him in on a strong swing to right center, but the inning stalled from there as Shane Mugnolo forced
Michael Boccarossa to fly out to end the inning.
The Hawks mustered just one hit in the following two innings, unable to rally from the four-run deficit and suffered their fourth-straight loss.
Along with Geraghty and McGee, Stalzer also garnered a hit in game two. Stalzer, Ortiz, McGee and
Nick Harvey each had a hit in game one.
After playing eight games in eight days, SUNY New Paltz is issued some rest before its next outing April 27 when it visits SUNY Plattsburgh for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
