New Paltz, NY — The 2022 SUNY New Paltz baseball schedule was released Tuesday, with the team looking for their first winning season since a 2016 campaign where they went 20-16-2. Since then, it has been tough sledding for the team, who in their last three full seasons have gone 13-19 (2019), 17-18 (2018), and 17-17 (2017).
The journey to flip the script begins in 2022 for SUNY New Paltz with five games, divided between Maryland and Virginia, from Feb. 19-27. Their first contest is a clash with Mount Saint Mary, and two games are on Feb. 26, against Virginia-Wesleyan and Ithaca, both in Virginia Beach. Four of the team's 2020 games, before the season was canceled, were against Mount Saint Mary in a double-header, with the Hawks splitting the games, losing 3-2 and winning 5-1.Â
The team will play Bard College March 6 for the first time since 2017, when they defeated the Raptors 8-3 and 4-2. The Hawks don't play a home game until March 15, when they host New Jersey City University from Loren Campbell Memorial Field at 3 p.m. SUNY New Paltz then begins their conference schedule with back-to-back home games vs. SUNY Plattsburgh, March 25 and 26. April 1 and 2 they will play back-to-back at SUNY Oswego. The Lakers were second overall in the SUNYAC in 2021, compiling a 25-7 overall record and 14-2 conference record, the latter of which tied SUNY Cortland, who finished first place overall in the SUNYAC. The Hawks have not beat the Lakers since 2017, when they scored an impressive 7-5 win over a team that was at the time ranked 13
th in the country.
SUNY Cortland, whom SUNY New Paltz last defeated in 2018, visit Loren Campbell Memorial Field Friday, May 6 for one game and then May 7 for a double-header. SUNY New Paltz looks to avenge four consecutive losses to Cortland, which they lost last season in a home and home set, giving up 17 runs in two of the four contests.
Five days later is the SUNYAC Tournament, running May 12-14 in a double elimination format. The NCAA Championships are June 3-8 from Cedar Rapids, IA, hosted by the American Rivers Conference and Cedar Rapids Tourism.Â
