SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Suffer First Loss of the Season Against Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday, falling on the road against Skidmore College, 3-0.

The matchup was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but due to inclement weather in the 518-area code, the game was moved to Thursday, giving the Thoroughbreds another day to recover from their overtime loss to SUNY Geneseo Saturday.

The Hawks (3-1 overall) meanwhile, headed into the contest following an impressive 4-3 victory at home against St. John Fisher Saturday, but struggled to produce the same type of offensive output they did against the Cardinals.

Despite holding the advantage on corners, 9-1, SUNY New Paltz had less attempts on goal than Skidmore (7-6) although it did out-shoot the hosts, 11-7, in the shutout.

The Thoroughbreds (3-2) took the early 1-0 lead off a corner nine minutes into the game with Maraih Redler beating Mackenzie Mortimer for the score. The game remained at 1-0 at halftime and stood until Skidmore scored a pair in the third quarter seven minutes apart with Bella Faber and CC Wetter recording their first goals of the season.

The Hawks garnered three corners in the fourth quarter and registered five shots with Skidmore's Jess Gaetgens making three saves and the Thoroughbreds even making a defensive save to preserve the shutout.

Gaetgens finished with five saves, while Mortimer registered two in 40-plus minutes with Ryan Dowling playing the last 20 minutes or so and finishing with two stops for the Hawks.

SUNY New Paltz will be on short rest, as it's back in action Saturday when it travels to the University of Rochester for a 4 p.m. game.
