Brockport, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team walked onto The College at Brockport's home turf and walked out with a 4-0 shutout to claim its first SUNYAC victory of the year and extend its winning streak to three games.
"Today we played well for the entire 60 minutes," said Hawks coach
Shanna Szablinski. "Kayla [Ahern] led the charge defensively, shutting down any quick strikes to Brockport's attack. As the game progressed, we dominated possession and found the holes in their defense leading to some great opportunities to score."
SUNY New Paltz improved to 6-1 with the victory and notched its second-straight shutout as well, coming off a 3-0 win over University of Rochester Wednesday. The Hawks were in full control throughout the game, as they held the Golden Eagles without a shot in the first quarter, while tallying five themselves and generated three penalty corners. Despite the chances, their first goal didn't come until the second quarter, which came off a corner played in by junior back
Julia Cummings. Cummings found
Jessica Ascencao who then played a pass back to Cummings who netted her fifth of the year.
Six minutes later, SUNY New Paltz added on as Ascencao assisted
Shannon Bernhardt for her first goal of the season.
The Hawks went into the second half with a 2-0 lead, but limited the chances for Brockport. The hosts only totaled three shots in the game — one on target —but only one attempt came in the first half.
Morgan Woolley pushed SUNY New Paltz ahead by three toward the end of the third quarter, putting away a pass from Cummings.
Morgan Gunter then put the finishing touches on the win after scoring her first of the year with
Hannah Ackerman and
Amanda Quennville registering assists on the play.
Woolley had a game-high seven shots, six on target with Ackerman following with five shots — all on net.
Mackenzie Mortimer and
Ryan Dowling split time in net with Dowling finishing with one stop. Brockport's Emma Acevedo finished with 14 saves.
"Our midfield definitely were more of a threat in our attacking 25 and this led to some really nice goals," Szablinski said. "Ryan and Mack and a few saves but anchored the defense and helped keep Brockport scoreless the entire game."
On a short break, SUNY New Paltz is back in action Tuesday when it travels to Union, NJ to face No. 4 nationally ranked and undefeated Kean University, which already has four wins over ranked opposition. Game is under the lights at 7:30 p.m.
