SUNY New Paltz Women's Tennis Opens Up Fall 2021 With 9-0 Sweep Over Cortland

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team opened a second consecutive season with a win over SUNY Cortland, winning 9-0 Friday.

The Hawks were originally scheduled to open up the year Wednesday at Oneonta, but due to Hurricane Ida, they needed to wait until Friday's out-of-conference match against their SUNYAC rival Red Dragons to kick-start their 2021-22 campaign.

SUNY New Paltz senior Trinity Chow and freshman Anya Barteck played at first doubles against Cortland's Issabella Bonapace and Logan Streety, finishing first with an 8-1 win. At third doubles, freshman Isabel van der Veen and sophomore Loretta Donovan won with a similar 8-1 win against Meredith Perine and Rachel Sullivan. Junior Onalee Batcheller and senior Alexandra Dratch had a bit of a battle with Vyda Van Denburg and Abby Madigan in second doubles, but came away with an 8-3 victory.Anya Barteck

Batcheller and van der Veen dominated their way to 6-0, 6-0 victories in third and fourth singles, while sophomore Tatiana Barnett and senior Alex Chimenti finished with 6-1, 6-1 victories in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Barteck, at second singles for her first singles' action, impressed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Chow, the three-time SUNYAC Most Valuable Player, won 6-0, 6-3 in first singles and secured the 9-0 sweep for the Hawks.

"It was great to pick up where we left off last season [in SUNYAC] with a strong performance against a determined Cortland team," said Hawks coach Rob Bruley. "I was very pleased about the way the team played and was very excited to see both our freshmen Anya Barteck and Isabel Van Der Veer obtain their first collegiate wins with many more wins to come over their collegiate careers as Hawks."

SUNY New Paltz travels north to SUNY Oswego to take on the Lakers Saturday. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
