New Paltz, NY — The NCAA released its first official regional rankings of the season this past week with the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team landing sixth in Region III.
The Hawks (9-4-3 overall), landed just ahead of Clarkson (8-3-3) and follow top ranked SUNY Cortland (12-4-2), Oneonta (11-2-2), Vassar (7-3-4), Rochester (6-3-4) and St. Lawrence (9-1-5), respectively. The Red Dragon of Cortland are listed at No. 16 in the country by United Soccer Coaches Association.
SUNY New Paltz has faced five teams featured on the NCAA regional rankings including Cortland, Oneonta and Vassar from Region III, along with Region IV's NYU and Region V's Drew with the Hawks earning a big road win over the Violets Sept. 10, 2-1.
After finishing the regular season third in the conference behind Cortland and Oneonta with a 6-2-1 conference mark, the Hawks host Plattsburgh State for a quarterfinal matchup Saturday on South Turf Field at 11 a.m.. The winner will head to Oneonta Nov. 2 for a battle to play in the SUNYAC Championship, which would be a first for SUNY New Paltz since the program's first and only title in 1965. The Hawks have earned semifinal bids in three of their last four seasons.
