Purchase, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz lost 4-2 Wednesday against Purchase College.
The Hawks (4-7 overall) produced a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth after an RBI triple by
Dean Stalzer plated
Ryan Mackle who got on with a one-out double.
Jordan Rios then scored Stalzer with a double to right center, but the offense halted there as
Jesse Keshner flied out to end the inning.
After three-straight extra base hits in the fourth, SUNY New Paltz was held to just one hit in the final five innings as the Panthers Myles Scarry earned the win after going eight innings with Ryan Castrataro pitching the ninth to close out with the save.
Purchase took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. A walk started the inning with the Panthers loading the bases with consecutive hits with no outs. Two ground outs helped plate two runs with a two-out RBI single giving Purchase a 3-2 lead. The hosts tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as a lead-off walk was eventually brought home after a two-out RBI double.
SUNY New Paltz produced five hits, two of which came from Rios as he finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mackle,
Justin Ortiz and Stalzer each had hits as well with Ortiz also registering a stolen base.
Bobby Ramsey earned the start and pitched two innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts.
Dominic Schuch helped continue the shutout with two innings pitched, giving up one hit, a walk and two strikeouts. Polestino was given the loss after pitching one inning, giving up three hits, three earned runs and two walks.
Jeremy Acosta,
Scott Wagner and
Nick Zangara each pitched an inning to finish out the game.
SUNY New Paltz returns to the diamond Friday, as it takes on Kean University for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. in Union, NJ.
