Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz opened up its first SUNYAC action of the spring and rolled to an 8-1 win on the road over SUNY Plattsburgh.
"Another all-around strong performance in cold, grey windy conditions," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "We had to move the line up around a little due to availability and injuries, so I'm very happy about players playing up in certain positions and performing in those higher spots."
SUNY New Paltz swept doubles play with
Trinity Chow and
Tatiana Barnett defeating the Cardinals' Cydney Bond and Sarah Hoeffner, 8-2 at first doubles. At second doubles,
Onalee Batcheller and
Alex Chimenti won 8-2 over Alyana Leandry and Jacqueline Svantner.
Isabel van der Veen and
Loretta Donovan helped the Hawks complete the sweep with an 8-3 victory over in third doubles.
Batcheller stepped in at first singles and handily took the victory, 6-1, 6-1 over Bond. Van der Veen had a comfortable win in second singles, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Leandry. Barnett won 6-0, 6-0 at threes, Donovan completed a 6-1, 6-2 win at fours and Chimenti swept her matchup at fives, 6-0, 6-0. Plattsburgh earned the win at sixth singles with the Cardinals' Bri Miller defeating
Amirah Alston, 6-1, 6-2.
The victory improved SUNY New Paltz to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in SUNYAC play, while dropping Plattsburgh to 6-6 and 1-3, respectively.
Due to pending weather the Hawks' scheduled game against Stevens Wednesday was canceled, which marks their next matchup Thursday at the Binghamton Tennis Club against SUNY Geneseo. They'll then play Fredonia the following day and The College at Brockport Saturday.
"Today's match was great preparation for our upcoming three-day SUNYAC that is starting this coming Thursday in Binghamton, which will go a long way in determining the seeds for the conference championships," Bruley added.
