SUNY New Paltz Softball Shutout in Doubleheader Series Against Geneseo

Geneseo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz 10-game winning streak came to an end Saturday after getting shutout in back-to-back games for the first time on the year, losing 3-0 and 8-0, respectively to hosting SUNY Geneseo.

Lindsay Roman was given the loss after pitching 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Sydney Waldon came in for relief in the third inning of game one and conceded just three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.

SUNY New Paltz totaled six hits in the first game and had runners in scoring position in the first inning, but couldn't convert. In the top of the second, Sydney Bonewit knocked a two-out double, but again, the Hawks couldn't take advantage.

The Knights took the lead in the bottom of the third after opening up the inning with a lead-off single. Roman registered two straight outs, but Geneseo extended the inning with an RBI single followed by a stolen base to get in scoring position. The Knight followed with an RBI double and Waldon then came in and got the last out to end the threat.

The Hawks had a chance to respond in the top of the fourth, as Jillian Shelbourne led off with a single. Back-to-back fielder's choices kept a runner on first with the inning ending on a single by Jessica Graepel and Nicole Greco getting tagged out at third trying to advance for an extra base.

Shelbourne and Graepel each had two hits for SUNY New Paltz, but Geneseo played clean in the field without any errors and giving up no walks. Its seven hits and two runs were enough to earn the win.

Game two was scoreless for both sides until the bottom of the fifth. Jillian Harrison, who earned the start, pitched tough and allowed just two hits through the first four innings, but gave up a lead-off single in the fifth. After earning a line-out on the next batter, a walk put two on with one out for the Knights. A groundout put runners on second and third for Geneseo, which capitalized with a one-out single through the left side of the infield, then added one more, scoring on the advance after a runner at first was caught in a pickle.

The Knights ended the game early in the bottom of the sixth, totaling six runs to earn the 8-0, 6-inning victory. Geneseo tallied 13 hits, eight of which came in the sixth. SUNY New Paltz, meanwhile, totaled three hits in the loss — all base hits — by Shelbourne, Graepel and Carol Ann Campsey.

Harrison was given the loss after throwing 5.1 innings, giving up nine hits, a walk and three earned runs.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday for a non-conference matchup against University of Scranton before coming back home for back-to-back SUNYAC doubleheader series against Oswego State and SUNY Cortland Friday and Saturday, respectively.
