SUNY New Paltz Baseball Close Three-Game Series with 14-3 Loss to Oswego

Endwell, NY – A tough weekend for the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team continued on Sunday afternoon, as it lost its third consecutive game to the Oswego State Lakers, 14-3.

On Saturday, the Hawks lost both games of a doubleheader against the now 13-win Lakers by counts of 15-6 and 2-0. On Sunday, SUNY New Paltz did not have its best game on both sides, unable to get much going offensively.

"Today did not go as we'd like, as with the series," said Hawks coach Thomas Seay. "Oswego is a very talented group and there's a reason they are the seventh-ranked team in the country."

Jacob Sanders, who improved to 3-0, gave up five hits and no earned runs over five innings. He began his day by retiring three of four SUNY New Paltz batters in inning number one, including a strikeout of Justin Ortiz to start the game.

Oswego got things going offensively in its first time up to the plate, with Ryan Enos singling into left field after James Trink struck out Paul Tammaro. After Kyle Lauria was walked, Lukas Olsson doubled into left field, bringing in Lauria and Enos for a 2-0 Laker lead. Trink regrouped, however, striking out Ryan Weiss and getting Julian Drew to ground out to short.

Sanders finished the Hawks in order in the second though, getting Michael Boccarossa to ground out to second, Leo Alvarez to fly out to right field, and Jordan Rios to ground out. Then Oswego started to create some distance in the bottom half of the second inning.

It started with a double into center field by Jacob Levine, and continued with a CJ McCarthy single. Despite Colin Williams grounding into a double play, Levine came around to score, giving the home team a 3-0 advantage. After Tammaro singled and Enos walked, Lauria hit a two-RBI triple to right field. Up 5-0, the Lakers added another when Olsson brought Lauria home with an RBI single. The inning came to a close after Weiss flew out.

SUNY New Paltz scored its first run in the top of third, and would not score again until the seventh. Matt Laurelli singled after Justin Harvey flew out, putting a runner on with one out. To follow up, Ortiz singled, advancing all the way to third on a throw, and bringing Laurelli in to make the score 6-1.

In the bottom half of the third inning, James McGovern came in to pitch for Trink. After getting Drew to pop up, Levine walked. McCarthy doubled to left, advancing Levine to third. Williams then hit into a fielder's choice that scored Levine, putting Oswego up 7-1.

The score remained 7-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Lakers took a commanding lead. Jeremy Acosta replaced McGovern, but walked Drew to lead the inning off. Levine followed up with a double into left field on the very next at-bat, putting runners at second and third with none out. McCarthy then hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot that put the home team in front 10-1. Four batters later, Lauria singled, scoring Tammaro and Enos, who walked and doubled, making the score 12-1. Matthew Polestino came onto pitch for Acosta, and was able to get out of the inning by striking out Olsonn and getting Weiss to fly out.

The Hawks threatened in the top of the sixth inning, when Ryan Mackle and Boccarossa led off the inning with singles. However, the scoring opportunity was squandered when Alvarez grounded into a double play and Rios struck out swinging. A home run from Sam Allen, also his first of the season, in the bottom of the sixth allowed Oswego to take a 13-1 lead into the seventh, when Jesse Keshner connected on an RBI double to bring Tommy Kreider around to score. After the Lakers went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks added another run in the top of the eighth.

With Jared Kwicinski pitching for Ben Wilcox, SUNY New Paltz put a run on the board. First, Mackle walked. Then, Boccarossa grounded out but advanced Mackle to second base in the process, putting him in scoring position. After a wild pitch to Alvarez advanced Mackle to third base, Alvarez grounded out but brought Mackle around to score. With the score 13-3, the Hawks looked like they had something going, but after a Rios double and Nick Harvey single put runners at second and third, Kreider was caught looking to end the frame.

Trink, with the loss, fell to 1-1, giving up seven hits and five earned runs in two innings. McCarthy was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead Oswego offensively, while Lauria was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Olsson was also 2-for-4 with three RBI. For SUNY New Paltz, leadoff hitter Ortiz was 2-for-4, while the cleanup hitter Mackle and Harvey were also 2-for-4. The Hawks did manage 12 hits, but just could not score when they needed to.

"We didn't do enough in any facet of the game to hang with them," said Seay.

Next up for the 5-12 SUNY New Paltz is a home game against New Jersey City University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

"The game plan moving forward is to get back to work," continued Seay. "Hopefully the weather will cooperate, but wherever we practice, we need to take advantage of our opportunities to get better and execute. We still have a lot of baseball to play but our deficiencies will not fix themselves."
