Geneseo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz ended its regular season campaign on the road against a tough SUNY Geneseo team, falling 18-3.
"Geneseo was very good today and despite the score, we played them hard for 60 minutes," said Hawks coach
Randy Vite.
The Knights took a 5-1 lead after the first quarter with SUNY New Paltz scoring the opening goal of the game just more than a minute in by
Shannon Brosnan on a free position attempt.
Alyssa Indelicato broke up a 7-0 run by Geneseo, netting her first of the day with about eight minutes left in the half, but the Knights kept piling on and held a 13-2 lead at the break.
Maddy Carullo concluded the offense for the Hawks, netting an unassisted goal with less than three minutes to go in the third quarter to trim the different to 16-3. Geneseo capped the game with two more goals in the fourth to close out the contest.
The Knights totaled 39 shots to the Hawks' eight with the hosts also holding the advantage in turnovers, suffering 12 to SUNY New Paltz's 22.
Cayci Hill led the Hawks with a team-high three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Hailey Aber made 10 saves in net.
The loss, along with a loss from Plattsburgh Saturday against Oswego, slotted SUNY New Paltz at the sixth seed in the SUNYAC Tournament, which starts Wednesday. The Hawks will hit the road for a re-match against No. 3 seed Brockport.
"It has been a goal of ours to make the postseason and it is so exciting to have the opportunity to continue our season," Vite said. "We are thankful to be able to play together for another week. We are up for the challenge, seeing Brockport for the second time, knowing that we played them so closely the first time."
