Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road for its first dual match of the season Wednesday and collected an 8-1 win over hosting SUNY Oneonta.
"Great all-around performance," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "Doubles teams really set the tone of the day with three solid wins. We took this confidence into singles matches winning matches one through five. Two outstanding performances were Justin Stanejko winning her first collegiate matches at one doubles and one singles and
Amirah Alston winning her first collegiate matches at third doubles and fifth singles."
SUNY New Paltz won all three doubles matches on the afternoon.
Justine Stanejko and
Loretta Donovan defeated the Red Dragons' Julia Holtermann and Maxie Karen, 8-5.
Onalee Batcheller and
Anya Barteck won their second doubles match over Sophia Schutte and Brianna Shaw, 8-3, while
Isabel van der Veen and
Amirah Alston won at third doubles, 8-1 over Jessica Harris and Danielle Copp.
Stanejko rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 decision at first singles over Holtermann, while Batcheller defeated Schutte in a tight match, 6-4, 6-3 at second singles. Barteck won 6-2, 6-2 over Karen at threes, with Donovan beating Shaw in an extended second set, 6-4, 7-6. Alston won comfortably at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0 with Oneonta winning at sixth singles as Jessica Harris defeated the Hawks'
Lillian Nowak, 6-4, 6-2.
The win was a bit of payback for SUNY New Paltz which saw its three-peat SUNYAC championship run cut by the Red Dragons this past May in the SUNYAC Finals. The Hawks, though, open up the season 1-0 in the SUNYAC with the Red Dragons dropping to 1-2 overall.
SUNY New Paltz continues its SUNYAC play Friday and Saturday, hosting Oswego at 3 p.m. and Cortland at 12 p.m., respectively, on the North Tennis Courts.
