New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team played host Wednesday to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Engineers claimed an 8-1 victory over the Hawks on the North Tennis Courts.
"Against one of the strongest teams in the Liberty League New Paltz competed at every level," said Hawks coach Rob Bruley. "RPI came out really strong in the doubles, being very aggressive at the net with strong volleys. Our No. 2 team of [Onalee] Batcheller and [Alex] Chimenti put up a brave fight going down 5-8 to a doubles team who will be representing the Northeast at the upcoming National ITA tournament next month. Although we found it tough going in the singles the highlight of the evening was freshman Justine Stanejko's win at No. 1 singles beating on the strongest senior at No. 1 singles players in the Northeast in a closely fought three set match that was decided by three tie breakers 6-7. 7-6 11-9. I was extremely pleased by the way each and every athlete competed today, which I hope will hold us in good stead for the upcoming four conference matches."
SUNY New Paltz will return to the court Saturday to host Plattsburgh State in a SUNYAC match at 1 p.m. on the North Tennis Courts.
