Madison, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz fell 2-1 in the opening game of the Drew/FDU Invitational Saturday to the hosting Rangers.
The Hawks went down a goal in the 13th minute of the game and kept the goal deficit throughout the half with Drew testing SUNY New Paltz goalkeeper
Christian Micheli seven times before halftime.
"Was a tough game against a good Drew team," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Kyle Clancy. "They came out and outplayed us for most of the first half. Thanks to some big saves by Christian, we were able to say in it going into the second half."
The Hawks had a prime opportunity to tie the game early in the second half after drawing a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick.
Tim Kane stepped up to take the attempt and tried going right side but Rangers goalie Calum Erlendborn, who guessed opposite, was able to get a foot on the attempt and make the stop to preserve the 1-0 lead for his team. The momentum shifted from there, as Drew added an insurance goal shortly after with the Rangers heading in a cross for the second score.
"We came out strong, possessed much better and got Drew a bit on their heels," Clancy said. "Unfortunately, we weren't quite locked in after the miss and just need to work on our mentality and organization when we are up against it."
Gabriel Cruz cut the deficit in half and kept SUNY New Paltz's chance at a tie alive with a goal in the 87th minute, finishing off a pass in by Kane.
Joseph DiPreta had one last look for SUNY New Paltz in the waning minutes, but his attempt went high to cement the 2-1 outcome.
Drew out-shot SUNY New Paltz 16-11 in the game with 11 shots coming in the first half alone, along with holding the advantage in shots-on-goal, 11-5. The Rangers also tallied more corner kick opportunities as well, 6-2 in the game.
Cruz led the Hawks with three shots, while Micheli finished the game with eight saves.
"It was good to see the team fight until the final whistle and make a game of it, and we will look to carry that approach in the final minutes into the game," Clancy said.
SUNY New Paltz closes out the Drew/FDU invitational Sunday against the hosting Devils at 3 p.m.
