Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz remained undefeated in the SUNYAC and extended its winning streak to 18 games on the road Friday night, routing hosting Plattsburgh 90-57.
The Hawks (21-3 overall, 17-0 SUNYAC), who already locked up the top seed in the SUNYAC Tournament last weekend, can make history Saturday with a win over Potsdam as the only team in program history to go undefeated at a perfect 18-0 in conference play.
SUNY New Paltz continued its hot play Friday night, collecting its second 30-point win in its last three games, and third-straight 20-point-plus victory, scoring a season-high 90 points over the Cardinals. It got out to a 10-point cushion entering the second quarter with a put-back by
Abby Korzekwinski in the final seconds upping the Hawks lead to 21-11.
After scoring a quick four points to open up the second period, SUNY New Paltz sustained a 15-point lead early in the quarter before ending the half on a 14-6 run that brought the advantage to 43-22 at the break.
Brianna Fitzgerald scored 13 of her 24 points in the third quarter to help SUNY New Paltz flex its lead to 25 entering the fourth quarter with the Hawks bench stepping in and putting the seal on another 30-point win.
Fitzgerald opened up the final 10 minutes with a make from behind the arc with Korzekwinski adding on following a steal by
Graci Serravillo on the ensuing possession.
Madison Mullman swished on a trey to bring the lead to 78-45 with more than six minutes to go before
Stasia Epler gave SUNY New Paltz its largest lead at 80-45 after getting her hands on a steal, then finishing on the offensive end with
Morgan Hammell credited on the assist. Epler earned a trip to the foul line in the final minute to re-up the 35-point lead before the Cardinals laid in two to solidify the 90-57 final score.
The Hawks registered a season-high 24 steals, while forcing 31 turnovers and scored 32 points off said turnovers. Fitzgerald led all scorers with 24 points in 23 minutes, shooting 8-for-13 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range with seven rebounds, two assists and a game-high five steals. Victoria Veunus and Serravillo followed with 11 points apiece with the latter adding three rebounds and two steals and the former pulling down six boards, two assists, a block and two steals. Hammell added eight points off the bench with two assists.
Jenny Walton chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds, one assist and three steals.
The Hawks close out the regular season Saturday on the road at Potsdam with program history on the line. They defeated the Bears earlier in the season, 77-47.
