Oswego, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered a 112-53 loss Friday night to No. 13 Oswego State.
The Hawks laid in the first two baskets of the game, but the Lakers answered with an 8-0 run and never withheld the lead from that point forward.
Jonah Bevacqua came off the bench and sank a 3 to cut the difference to four eight minutes in with
Rylan Blondo bringing the deficit down to four once more two possessions later, but a 9-0 run in the following two minutes quickly built Oswego a double-digit cushion.
With Oswego taking a 49-25 lead into the break, SUNY New Paltz climbed back with four straight points to open up the second half to get within 20. Blondo finished on a fast-break layup to close the gap to 23 with 13 minutes to go, but the game turned within the next four minutes with the Lakers going on a 26-0 run that ballooned the lead to 49 with eight minutes left.
Dakoda Smith knocked down a 3 next time down the floor to stop the unanswered stretch, but the Hawks struggled to chip away and suffered its largest score differential of the season.
SUNY New Paltz yielded 100-plus points just twice this year, both coming against the nationally ranked Lakers. They struggled shooting the ball, hitting just 26.8 percent from the field —lowest on the season to go along with a season-low in points.
Isaiah Bien-Aise was the only player in double-figures for SUNY New Paltz, finishing with a team-high 11 points and eight rebounds.
Sean St. Lucia and Bevacqua followed with six points with the former adding three assists, two rebounds and a steal with the latter finishing with two rebounds and an assist.
The Hawks drop to 10-9 on the season and 8-5 in the SUNYAC, while ending a two-game winning streak. They hope to get back in the win column Saturday with another big matchup against SUNY Cortland. SUNY New Paltz earned the early season win on Jan. 20 against the Red Dragons, 95-81.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
