SUNY New Paltz Softball Splits Day Two at The PFX Spring Games

Hawks Earn 8-7 Win Over Dominican, Fall to Lebanon Valley, 4-1

Winter Haven, FL — Day two was a split for the State University of New York at New Paltz Saturday with the Hawks falling, 4-1 to Lebanon Valley before earning an 8-7 victory over Dominican University (Ill).

SUNY New Paltz closed the afternoon with a tight win over the Stars with Lindsay Roman improving to 3-0 on the mound and Jillian Harrison picking up the save.

The Hawks took the lead in the second after Kelly Marmorowski opened the inning with a lead-off single. Sydney Bonewit eventually brought the run home on a groundout. Rhionna Bianchini followed with an RBI single to plate Emmie Mae Cabrera who got on with a base hit earlier in the inning.

Dominican took the lead in the top of the third, but SUNY New Paltz answered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. Jackie Rometo led off with a single, stole second and then moved to third on a ground out before a wild pitch allowed her to touch home to knot the game. The Stars regained the advantage in the fourth, going up 5-3, but once again the Hawks answered in the bottom half. Jillian Shelbourne led off with a single with Catie Driscoll running for her, she was later brought home on an RBI single by Juliet Bernstein. Rometo was up once again and made the most of runners on, smacking an RBI base hit to bring SUNY New Paltz within one. Bernstein then tied the game, as an error allowed her to score with the Hawks adding on on a delayed double steal that allowed Rometo to touch home to push the lead to 7-5 entering the fourth.

The cushion was enough for SUNY New Paltz to hold on for the win, adding an insurance run in the fifth. Dominican threatened with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but Harrison closed out the final 1.1 innings, striking out the side to end game and record the save.
Lindsay Roman

Roman pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and five earned runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Harrison allowed just two hits with one walk and a strikeout. Rometo led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases. Marmorowski followed with two hits and a run scored, while Shelbourne and Cabrera each went 2-for-2 with the latter adding an RBI and the former a run scored.

The win over the Stars put an end to a two-game losing skid for SUNY New Paltz, as the Hawks suffered their second consecutive loss after opening up with a 4-1 defeat against Lebanon Valley Saturday morning. SUNY New Paltz produced just four hits, coming from Rometo, Jaycee Filancia,  Marmorowski and  Shelbourne.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third with the Flying Dutchmen playing small ball, getting a runner on with a one-out single. A fielder's choice earned the Hawks their second out, but a stolen base brought the runner into scoring position with Lebanon Valley following with a base hit, advancing the runner on to third. The Flying Dutchmen took the lead on a double steal with the runner at third touching home to bring them a 1-0 advantage before Harrison struck out the side to end the threat.

After a 1-2-3 inning, Lebanon Valley added a run in the bottom of the fourth. It opened up the inning with a lead-off single and followed with a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by Kelsey O'Brien at third allowing two runs on with no outs. Another sac bunt advanced the runners on to second and third, but SUNY New Paltz earned the first out of the inning. The Flying Dutchmen then scored another on a groundout to take a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks threatened in the fifth with Shelbourne hitting a single up the middle to lead-off with Morgan Lanberg coming in to pinch run. Harrison did her part, laying down a sac bunt to move the runner over into scoring position with Cabrera moving Lanberg to third on a ground out. They couldn't capitalize though, as a ground out ended the inning with SUNY New Paltz still facing a two-run deficit, which expanded to four after the bottom of the fifth.

The Flying Dutchmen began the inning with back-to-back hits, but another error by the Hawks loaded the bases, setting the table for a two RBI double that brought the difference to four. Roman came in to pitch for Harrison and struck out the last two batters to end the inning.

The Hawks answered in the top of the sixth with Lebanon Valley allowing Rometo on to lead-off the inning following a fielding error with a wild pitch moving her over to second with no outs. A groundout a batter later placed Rometo at third and Marmorowski brought her home on an RBI single down the left field side to get her team on the board.

SUNY New Paltz has Sunday off before getting back on the dirt Monday, facing Hamilton College and University of Chicago at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
