SUNY New Paltz Softball Earn 9-5 Win Over Hamilton, Fall to UChicago, 3-2

Jan Phil Village, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz concluded its third day of competition at The PFX Spring Games Monday with a split in its two games, beating Hamilton, 9-5 but falling to University of Chicago, 3-2.

The Hawks win over the Continentals was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Jackie Rometo and Kelsey O'Brien with the latter registering her first of her collegiate career. Rometo initially gave SUNY New Paltz a 3-0 lead after rocking her second career homer to left field, plating Sydney Bonewit and Jillian Shelbourne as well as herself with two outs in the second. O'Brien then followed up behind her to extend the advantage to 4-0 also pulling a home run to the left side.

SUNY New Paltz added another run in the top of the third. Juliet Bernstein doubled to lead-off the inning and advanced to third on a groundout with Isabella Shepherd bringing her home on an RBI single. A pair of doubles by Hamilton helped the difference down to 5-3 entering the fifth inning. Shelbourne provided the Hawks a lead-off double to start the top half with Lauren Sarrao coming in to pinch run. She scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Bonewit to re-up the three-run advantage.

SUNY New Paltz took a 9-3 lead in the seventh on an RBI base hit by Bonewit, RBI double by Rhionna Bianchini and sacrifice fly by Rometo. Hamilton came close in the bottom of the inning, but Sydney Waldon closed out with a flyout to solidify the win.
