Jan Phyl Village, FL —The State University of New York at New Paltz earned a 5-1 win over College of Wooster after falling to Clarkson University, 7-1 on Tuesday at The PFX Spring Games.
Lindsay Roman improved to 5-0 for the Hawks after pitching a complete game, giving up just five hits and no earned runs with a season-high eight strikeouts against the Scots.
Rhionna Bianchini gave SUNY New Paltz the lead in the first, scoring on an error after getting on with a one-out double to start the game. The Hawks added on in the top of the fourth, capitalizing again on errors by Wooster. A fielding error allowed
Lauren Serrao on safely to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch in the following at-bat. Serrao then scored after another fielding error on a base hit by
Isabella Shepherd.
Catie Driscoll then scored Shepherd from second on an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Scots pushed a run across in the bottom half, but SUNY New Paltz re-established a three-run lead in the fifth to solidify the win. Bianchini led off with a double and later reached home on an error two batters later with
Jillian Shelbourne credited with an RBI.
Sydney Bonewit laid down a sacrifice bunt with the Scots botching the throw, allowing
Jackie Rometo to score with the sophomore getting on earlier in the inning on a base hit.
Bianchini went 2-for-4 with two runs. Rometo also went 2-for-4 with one run, while Shepherd hit 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and Driscoll went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Hawks bounced back after falling to the Golden Knights in their first matchup of the day. Clarkson scored runs in the first and second innings and held onto a 2-0 lead until the seventh. SUNY New Paltz had runners in scoring position in the first and fourth innings, including runners on second and third with two outs in the fourth, but was unable to push a run across.
Clarkson then scored five in the seventh to create a cushion with the Hawks offense producing one run in the bottom of the inning.
Jillian Harrison pitched well, giving up 10 hits with five coming in the final inning. She ultimately threw 6.2 innings, allowed three earned runs and three walks with four strikeouts in 35 batters faced.
Erin Barno came in to get the last out of the game, facing one batter.
